Mobilizing South Asian Americans to vote blue in the upcoming 2020 elections
For 2020, They See Blue is planning to scale its 2018 model (which was focused on flipping selected House seats in California from red to blue) and extend our playbook to the national level. In addition to defending our hard-won gains in the House, we also want to flip the Senate and elect a Democratic President. Unlike the House seats in California’s Central Valley which we focused on in 2018, the Senate and Presidency battles will be fought in remote swing states, most of which are out of driving range from our original base in the San Francisco Bay Area. Thus, our strategy is to replicate our original group in Silicon Valley and build similar chapters all over the country, particularly in states which will play a key role in the general election of November 2020.
Our guiding principle for these new chapters remains the same: mobilize the South Asian (“Desi”) community to vote for Democratic candidates up and down the ballot. Our goal is to increase voter turnout among Democrats and independents in the South Asian community by using our personal connections and shared cultural identity.
According to a recent report from the Center for American Progress, there is >10% turnout gap between white Americans voters and eligible Asian-Americans. This gap has existed for decades and shows no sign of closing without targeted intervention. The report suggests 5 ways to increase Asian-American voter turnout:
Collect robust disaggregated data on Asian Americans.
Eliminate language barriers to voting
Prioritize Asian-American outreach in political campaigns
End discriminatory voter-purging policies
Remove barriers to voter registration
At They See Blue, we are already working on these recommended actions for the South-Asian community across the US. Our fundamental organizing strategy is to conduct outreach through the lens of cultural connection and shared values.
Our vision of South-Asian voter mobilization has started to resonate with people from all over the US and we have stared to grow rapidly, with They See Blue chapters springing up all over the country. We now have chapters or alliances in various stages of formation in many of our targeted 15 states (AZ, CO, FL, GA, ME, MI, MN, NC, NH, NV, OH, PA, TX, VA, WI), and our goal is to establish chapters in each of them by the fall.
