Mobilizing South Asian Americans to vote blue in the upcoming 2020 elections
Defend the House
- Re-elect Josh Harder in District CA-10
- Re-elect TJ Cox in District CA-21
Flip the Senate
- Attain Democratic majority by unseating at least 4 incumbent Republican senators
(remove Mitch McConnell as Senate Majority Leader)
Take back the White House
- Elect Joe Biden (defeat Donald Trump)
Additional races to be selected by individual TSB chapters
During 2020, They See Blue plans to scale its 2018 model, which was focused on flipping selected House seats in California from red to blue, to the national level. In addition to defending hard-won gains in the House, They See Blue will work to flip the Senate and elect a Democratic President. Expansion will be be prioritized in the swing states, and thus They See Blue will endeavor to build local chapters across the nation.
They See Blue's guiding principle for these new chapters remains the same: mobilize the South Asian American community to vote for Democratic candidates up and down the ballot. The goal is to increase voter turnout among Democrats and Independents in the South Asian American community by leveraging personal relationships and shared cultural identity.
According to a recent report from the Center for American Progress, there is a greater than 10% turnout gap between white Americans and eligible Asian American voters. This gap has existed for decades and shows no sign of closing without targeted intervention. The report suggests five ways to increase Asian-American voter turnout:
Collect robust disaggregated data on Asian Americans.
Eliminate language barriers to voting
Prioritize Asian-American outreach in political campaigns
End discriminatory voter-purging policies
Remove barriers to voter registration
At They See Blue, we are already working on these recommended actions for the South Asian community across the United States. Our fundamental organizing strategy is to conduct outreach through the lens of cultural connection and shared values.
Our vision of South-Asian voter mobilization has started to resonate with people from all over the US and we have started to grow rapidly, with They See Blue chapters springing up all over the country. They See Blue now has chapters or alliances in various stages of formation in many of our targeted 15 states (AZ, CO, FL, GA, ME, MI, MN, NC, NH, NV, OH, PA, TX, VA, WI), and our goal is to establish chapters in each of them by the fall.
